The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) In Edo office has started a training programme that will prepare all the security agencies that will participate in the forthcoming elections scheduled for September 19, 2020.
The commission confirmed that the training programme has begun on Aug.5, it will end on Aug.7. The participants were welcomed by the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Jonathan Alalibo in Benin. He said the training involved different security agencies who will work towards tackling the breaches that could affect the election process.

Alalibo said: “As we are aware, political campaigns have started and already the state is beginning to notice some sort of skirmishes that are quite antithetical to the core values of free, fair and credible elections.”
The REC further stated that the training of security agencies is essential as it will show the trainees some crucial issues related to keeping the process and providing a protected environment for electorates.“The commission will provide a veritable opportunity to build on the incremental gains on the conduct of the security agencies since the 2019 general elections,” he added.
Alalibo expressed gratitude to the INEC for organising the training which is anticipated to prepare the security agencies to their main mandate of providing a safe environment for the voters.

Director-General of the Electoral Institute, Sa’ad Idris said it was crucial to note that this was one of the significant training the commission was conducting during the coronavirus pandemic. “You are therefore enjoined to follow the framework for the conduct of elections during COVID-19 pandemic issued by the commission,” he said.
Board of the Electoral Institute, Chairman Solomon Soyebi noted that the training would assist to extend the democratic process and help the commission attain its mandate of providing fair elections.
