The lawmaker, who represents the Aniocha/Oshimili federal seat on the Labour Party (LP) platform, was fired on Monday by a panel convened in Asaba, the state capital.

During the 25 February National Assembly elections, Mr Okolie upset the former Minority Leader of the House, Ndudi Elumelu.

He received 53, 879 votes, whereas Mr Elumelu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received 33, 466.

Despite the fact that the case is set to go to the Court of Appeal, it has the potential to open Pandora’s box for MPs elected on the LP platform.

Before Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, joined and became its presidential candidate in 2022, the LP was a fringe party.

Mr Obi’s popularity led to a huge defection of politicians to the party, and several candidates for the National Assembly won their elections on the strength of his popularity.

Many of them are being questioned about their party membership under Sections 77(2 and 3) of the Electoral Act.

Many candidates who ran on the party’s platform around the country did not appear to fit the condition, according to reports.

The lawyers stated that the LP presidential candidate could not challenge the outcome of the presidential election since he had not been legally nominated in accordance with the Electoral Act.
