Mukesh Ambani’s conglomerate, Reliance Industries Ltd., has announced the launch of an internet-enabled phone in India on Monday.
The phone has been announced at an entry price of 999 rupees ($12). The move is aimed at capturing a wider market share in India’s growing consumer market.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., India’s leading wireless carrier, will commence beta trials for the first one million ‘Jio Bharat’ phones from July 7.
The above information was gleaned from a statement by Reliance Industries’ telecommunications unit.
These phones will be bundled with unlimited voice calls and 14 GB of data per month, available for 123 rupees.
This launch marks another disruptive strategy by Mukesh Ambani, who previously employed similar tactics when entering the retail business in 2006 and the telecom sector in 2016.
Through aggressive pricing and innovative offerings, Reliance emerged as the market leader in both sectors.
Akash Ambani, Chairman at Reliance Jio, highlighted that there are still 250 million mobile phone users in India who are “trapped” in the 2G era, unable to access basic internet features.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world is moving towards 5G technology. The affordable internet-enabled phone aims to bridge this gap and empower users with internet connectivity.
It is also expected to support Reliance’s foray into the entertainment industry with its streaming service.
Furthermore, Reliance Jio has ambitious plans to invest $25 billion in rolling out 5G services across India by December 2023.
