According to reports, Ikhine’s decision to leave the PDP was influenced by what were characterised as irreconcilable differences between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

In a letter dated July 8, 2023, addressed to the Chairman, PDP Ward 7 (Ukpenu/ Ujolen/ Emuhi) Ekpoma, Esan West local government area, Ikhine stated, “It has been a great honour to contribute to the growth and success of this party over the years, with People Democratic Party recording outstanding results from my Ward all through the 24 years of working with you.”

My commitment to the people of Ward 7, Esan-West Local Government, and the people of Edo remains firm, and I am determined to continue serving them in other capacities.

When asked on the phone why he left the party, he stated, “It was for personal reasons.”

On his governorship ambitions and what comes next “I am still consulting,” Ikhine stated of his gubernatorial ambitions and future destination, “but I will be joining the APC a few days from now and I will address a press conference soon to clear the grey areas.”

After being disqualified by the APC, Ikhine was the first governorship aspirant ahead of the 2020 governorship election to step aside for Governor Godwin Obaseki, donating his campaign headquarters and structure to Obaseki to realise his second term aspiration.

It was reported that he and the governor agreed that he would have the right of first refusal before 2024, but it appears that the governor is unwilling to honour that gentleman’s agreement.
