First-Class Graduate Of Ibadan Varsity Killed For Stealing Bread

First-Class graduate of the University of Ibadan was beaten to death for allegedly stealing bread from a stall.

Opuofoni Freeborn Ebimotimi, a First-Class graduate of the University of Ibadan in Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria, was beaten to death by a mob in Bayelsa State for allegedly stealing bread.

According to SurgeZirc NG,  the graduate was killed in the early hours of Tuesday in Honeyhill Tombia, Bayelsa State, after an alarm was sounded, prompting an enraged mob to attack him.

The police have confirmed the unfortunate death and have apprehended three suspects.

According to some sources in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, Ebimotimi, a local of Korokorosei community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government area, allegedly stole from a business owner in the community.

His younger sister, Idisemi Opuofoni Freeborn, stated that witnesses to the occurrence hurried to the site and pleaded with the angry teenagers to let him live, promising to pay for the bread in double folds, but the irate youths refused and killed him.

The Bayelsa State Police Command, stated that three individuals have been arrested and an investigation is ongoing.

The Bayelsa State Police have detained the three peopl in connection with the mob action by an unruly crowd that resulted in the death of Ebimotimi Freeborn, a 32 year old male.

The suspects, Preye Mathew ‘f’ 50 years old, Theophilus Tiro’m’ 28 years old, and Famous Precious’m’ 22 years old, were apprehended on 9 July 2023 at around 1700 hours on the Tombia-Amassoma road after an irate mob lynched the suspect to death for allegedly stealing bread.

The Command criticised the mob’s actions and warned members of the public not to take the law into their own hands.

“The suspects are being interrogated and will be charged in court once the investigation is completed,” said SP Asinim Butswat, the Police Public Relations Officer.
