Building Collapse: Buhari Reacts, Commiserates With Bereaved Families

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with families who have lost loved ones in the 21-storey building collapse in Lagos, while several people are still trapped at the time of writing this report.

A statement by the president’s spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, on Monday in Abuja, said President Buhari shared the sad moment with people and Government of Lagos State, urging authorities to step up efforts in rescue operations.

He called on emergency institutions, including hospitals, to provide all the necessary support to safeguard the lives of the rescued.

“Buhari commiserated with the government and good people of Lagos State and pledges assistance of the Federal Government as may be required by the state.

“It touches one to lose precious lives in any kind of mishap, particularly those so young and tender. May God grant everyone affected by this sad incident fortitude and succour

“He charged the Lagos State government to do all that is needful so that such tragic developments do not recur in future,” the statement partly read.

Also, the Director-General of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, noted that heavy-duty equipment and life detection equipment have been deployed to the scene.

Meanwhile, Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director-General of Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) in his update, said; “Collapsed Building at Gerard Road, Ikoyi: The agency has activated its emergency response plan to the above incident.

“All first responders are en route to secure the scene while the heavy-duty equipment and life detection equipment have been dispatched.”

Also, NEMA Coordinator, South West, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye while speaking with SurgeZirc NG reporter, said five people have been rescued so far, adding that rescue operation in search of the victims has been intensified.

The building, which is under construction is located at off Alexander way, Gerrard Road in Ikoyi, Lagos.
