China’s top search engine provider, Baidu, has said that its chatbot had surpassed the well-known Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot.
It claims its rival bot had outperformed the popular ChatGPT on several metrics. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched on November 30, 2022.

In a statement on Tuesday, Baidu said that its Ernie 3.5, the most recent version of its Ernie AI model, had outperformed “ChatGPT in comprehensive ability scores”
It said it had also surpassed “GPT-4 in several Chinese capabilities”.
The Chinese company, based in Beijing, referenced a test ran by the state’s newspaper – China Daily – using a number of datasets.
C-Eval and AGIEval were some of the datasets used as yardsticks to evaluate the performance of the AI models.
The announcement by Baidu comes at a time when there’s a world-wide buzz in the AI space stirred by ChatGPT’s spread across China.
This had caused several domestic companies to launch their own counter products. Baidu led the launch of rival products with the announcement of its Ernie AI model.
Launched in March, the latest Ernie 3.5 which was built on the company’s already existing Ernie 3.0 has been undergoing test runs for the past three months only on invitation.
Also, renowned Chinese tech companies, including Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) and Alibaba Group (9988.HK) had also launched their own AI models.
Baidu said its model had a superior training and interference efficiency, setting it on the path for cheaper and faster future models.

It also said that the new Ernie 3.5 model would support external plugins. With plugins, the Chinese Tech giant’s AI bot will be able to work on scenarios with advanced difficulty.
For example, the model will be able to summarize long text as well as generate answers to questions with increased precision.
