Ambrose Ali University Students Protest Over 300% Tuition Increment

AAU students are protesting a 300% increase in tuition. The National Association of Nigerian Students protested an increase in tuition fees at Ambrose Alli University, (AAU) Ekpoma on Friday.

While at the premises of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, the students’ national body sought the reversal of the over three hundred percent School Fees hike, as well as the dismissal of the Special Intervention Team (SIT), whose tenure is set to expire on June 24, 2023.

The students also sought the dismissal of the University’s Acting Vice Chancellor.Sonnie Adagbonyin, Ph.D.

Comrade Vanessa Egheahie, Vice President, Inter Campus Affairs of NANS, stated that the Edo State Government should return to the former rates paid.

Fees must be paid by students prior to the new increase, or NANS will relocate its headquarters to AAU to enforce the reversal, as kids from low-income families cannot afford to attend school with the higher charges.

She claims that the new fees make AAU the most expensive public university in Nigeria, with law students expecting to pay 741,5000 instead of 185,000. Medical Science students will pay 638,000, compared to 216 for new students.

We are angry because the Edo State Government and the AAU Special Intervention Team (SIT) have increased the school fees for AAU students by more than 300%.

Those who have the right to increase fees are those who have worked to improve the school’s infrastructure.

It is regrettable that the state government has raised these fees, making it hard for low-income students to attend school.

She further stated that the SIT, whose term is set to expire on June 24, 2023, has failed in its job of overseeing and assisting the institution in its search for funding and should be fired by the Edo State Government.

When this charge was raised, we went to them and begged them to consider the needy, as many students are the ones who pay for their own education and cannot afford these outrageous fees.
