Liverpool Football Club has officially announced that Darwin Nunez will be taking up the prestigious number nine shirt following Roberto Firmino’s departure this summer.
The number nine jersey holds significant historical value, having been worn by legendary players such as Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres.

Nunez, the Uruguayan international, recognizes the weight of responsibility that comes with donning this iconic number but is thrilled to embrace the challenge.
In an interview with Liverpool’s official website, Nunez expressed his happiness and pride in becoming the club’s number nine.
He acknowledged the impressive legacy of previous players who represented the number and expressed his hope to follow in their footsteps.
“I’m really happy to wear number nine. And I’m very proud too,” he explained.
Nunez added: “Honestly, previously other players represented this number really well and now it’s my turn to wear it. And I hope that everything goes well.
“I hope I’m able to represent it the best way just as the previous players did. And hopefully, this is for many years and that it brings a lot of joy too.”
Nunez eagerly awaits the upcoming season, aiming to achieve the same targets as before, albeit with a different number on his back.
Liverpool has already assured fans who purchased the 2023/24 home shirt featuring Nunez’s old number, 27, that they will be able to exchange it for the updated version with his new number.
This gesture highlights the club’s commitment to accommodating the changes and ensuring fan satisfaction.
Having scored 15 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions last season, Nunez understands that he needs to raise his performance levels to help Liverpool compete for major honors once again.
Jurgen Klopp, the club’s manager, has previously expressed his belief in Nunez’s potential and expects further development from the striker.
Klopp attributed Nunez’s initial challenges to joining a team that wasn’t operating at its best.
“There’s a lot more to come,” Klopp said. “That’s clear. He needs time to settle. The most difficult thing for a striker is to come into a team that is not clicking.
“Imagine if he played for us in a good season, an 80-point or more season, he would have scored more goals, definitely.
“But it is like now each situation we created and we miss it and it is a more high level.
“Mo Salah, in his best season when he scored 40-odd goals, missed chances. That’s normal.

“Erling Haaland [has] missed chances. But they had much more than we created in this period. Fifteen goals is absolutely fine.”
The Uruguay international acknowledges that he needs time to settle into the team and hopes for more fruitful seasons, where his goal-scoring abilities can be fully realized.
