Soldiers resign over alleged corruption in the army, this comes days after the Nigerian Army increased ‘Feeding’ allowance from N1,000 To N1,200 for their personnel.

The Nigerian Army announced an increase in Ration Cash Allowance for its members.

In place of “central feeding,” the RCA handles the nutrition of Nigerian military personnel.

The affected personnel are fed centrally where the central feeding arrangement is available.

“RCA is applicable in the following circumstances:

1. Military personnel enrolled in residential courses at military institutions other than their usual place of residence.

“2. Military personnel on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

“3. Military personnel admitted to military hospitals.”

“4. Military personnel participating in authorised military exercises and operations.”

“5. Military personnel on escort or temporary duty for 24 hours or more outside their duty station.”

According to sources, the army made the decision in response to the Nigerian government’s recent elimination of gasoline subsidies, which caused an increase in the cost of products and services across the country.

“Sequel to the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria, with its attendant rise in the prices of goods and services across the country, the COAS has graciously approved an upward review of Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) for troops from One Thousand Naira (N1,000:00) to One Thousand Two Hundred Naira (N1,200.00) with effect from August 2023,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, more soldiers in Northeast Nigeria and other theatres of operations have requested voluntary retirement from the Chief of Army Staff.

The measure comes despite the military’s ongoing security challenges in most parts of the country.

The soldiers, selected from various army organisations across the country, are all junior cadres primarily combating terrorists and militants.

Since then, the Chief of Army Staff has accepted their formal separation.

The list of outgoing soldiers, which numbered 19, did not distinguish between those leaving the army voluntarily and those leaving on medical grounds.
