The destruction was carried out in coordination with other sister agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), at the Epe dumpsite in Lagos.
Tramadol tablets, codeine cough syrup, diclofenac tablets and injections, pramo sex, viagra tablets, black cobra tablets, sildenafil citrate tablets, chakapain extra tablets, mebendazole tablets, Royal chest lung tablets, Dr. Ibramol tablets, Omeprazole capsules, and Cotrimoxazole tablets were among the items destroyed.
Diavita loperamide capsules, Diarrhea stop, Chlorphanamene malfate capsules, as well as energy drinks and other products that did not match the statutory import standards, are among the others.
Adonye Dappa-Williams, the Assistant Controller General of the Nigerian Custom Service in charge of Enforcement, Inspection, and Investment, told reporters that the products had all been condemned by courts of competent jurisdiction.
He stated that the commodities were transported into the country via seaports and land borders in the Southwest region, and that the destruction is intended to deter the importation and consumption of these items.
He commended sister agencies for their ongoing collaboration and synergy in making this monumental step possible.
Jemila Ashiru, a spokesperson of NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, credited the effectiveness of the seizures and destruction.
She claimed the medications were unregistered, unmanaged, and expired, and that the vast quantity destroyed would have harmed Nigerians’ health if allowed to enter the system.
According to her, the sister agencies’ legal departments are processing the arrest of the importers, who will be prosecuted soon.
