The 37-year-old Spanish international spent a decade at City, winning four Premier League titles in over 400 appearances.
After leaving Manchester City in 2020, Silva joined Real Sociedad and was about to start his fourth season with the club.
However, a pre-season training injury to his anterior cruciate ligament has led him to make the tough decision to retire.
Throughout his 20-year playing career, Silva also played for Eibar and Celta Vigo.
He earned 125 caps for Spain’s national team and was part of the squads that won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
In a heartfelt statement, Silva expressed his sadness at bidding farewell to the sport he dedicated his life to and to his colleagues, whom he considers like family.
He thanked his former clubs, including Valencia, Eibar, Celta Vigo, Manchester City, and Real Sociedad, for making him feel at home.
In his words: “Today is a sad day for me. “Today it is time to say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to.
Today it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues, who are like family to me. I will miss you very much.
