The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, stated on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, that the commission may call for political parties and their candidates in Edo governorship elections to discuss the fierce rallies held by certain political parties in the state.

Yakubu reported that the commission will have a meeting on Thursday, August 6, 2020, to discuss the developments on the Edo election before it may schedule an urgent meeting with the political parties.

“We are carefully monitoring what is happening in Edo state and also in Ondo. Given the urgency of the situation in Edo state, we may have to immediately call a meeting of not just the candidates and the political parties but also the campaign councils, whatever we have to do to stem the ugly report of violence so far,” he stated.

The INEC chairman also added that the commission has decided that they will simply withdraw an election when interrupted during the process. Yakubu also mentioned that he has checked the election materials at the INEC office in Nasarawa, and the commission has delivered everything that will be required for the Nasarawa central constituency set to take place on Saturday.

“My overall assessment is that we are good to go in Nasarawa state. It is an important election for us because this is the first election in Nigeria in the context of COVID-19 and we deliberately chose to start with Nasarawa central by-election so that we can learn the vital lessons we need to learn ahead of the Edo and Ondo governorship elections, as well as 15 outstanding by-elections including six senatorial districts,” added the INEC Chairman.

Yakubu said he was satisfied and reassured of everything and he anticipates a good election process on Saturday.
