The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has reacted to the withdrawal of his invitation to speak at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 60th Annual General Conference set to take place virtually from August 26 to August 29, 2020.

This comes after the NBA announced on Thursday, 20 August 2020, that the governor will no longer speak at the conference. Following an online campaign against El-Rufai’s participation that gathered steam on Monday, August 17, with intimidations by masses of lawyers to boycott the conference as long as he is involved.

Due to the killings and insecurity issues in his state, the lawyers, who had threatened to boycott the conference, argued that the Kaduna State governor is a bad fit for the NBA’s image.

Recall that he was scheduled to speak during a session tagged ‘Am I a Nigerian- A Debate on National Identity, The Indigeneship- Citizenship Conundrum. Moreover, the NBA announced that the session would be a showcase of the conference that would also allow El-Rufai to address the insecurity issues in his state.

However, El-Rufai revealed that he will continue to make his voice heard on issues affecting the nation, with or without the association. A statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Muyiwa Adekeye, disclosed that the governor will continue to contribute to the national conversation.

The statement read: “When lawyer friends requested Malam Nasir El-Rufai to accept the invitation of the NBA to participate in a panel discussion on national identity, he accepted as part of his commitment to having a national conversation and the evolution of a national consensus.

“NBA platform or not, these worthy conversations must continue. He will continue to make his voice heard on the things our country needs to do for its progress. While the decision about who speaks at its event is clearly the NBA’s, Malam El-Rufai wishes to make clear that he did not seek the platform and is not agitated that he has one less speaking engagement.”
