The governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has accused his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for putting the state in debt through reckless borrowing of money when he was still governor of the State.
Obaseki made the claim during the Edo Governorship debate organised by Channels Television on Sunday, September 13, 2020. While addressing, the governor pointed out that the Oshiomhole-led administration was responsible for the state’s debt burden.

“Let me make some points very clear. What happened is that my predecessor in office borrowed recklessly and the Federal Government had to restructure all the debts that we have taken before I came into office.
“These included a whole series of bank borrowings, borrowing to pay salaries. So the Federal Government restricted outstanding obligations to Edo State, to the tune of almost N30 billion. That was what was responsible for adding to the debt stock, not borrowing from this administration,” said Obaseki.

It would be recalled that Obaseki has declared that the forthcoming Governorship election in the state, would be a challenge to his predecessor.
The governor also accused the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), of owing contractors to the tune of N70bn. However, he commended Oshiomhole’s government for servicing the debt and also providing the needed development to the people.
