The Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the Nigeria Police Bill, 2020, into law. The President’s spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina made this known in a statement released on Thursday, September 17, 2020, in Abuja.

According to Adesina, President Buhari communicated his asset to the Bill to the National Assembly, through the Clerk of the legislature.

The spokesman further reported that the Act revokes the Police Act Cap. P19. Laws of the Federation, 2004, and provides for a more operative and well organised Police Force.

In addition, Adesina further stated that the new law was driven by the principles of transparency, adding that accountability in police force operations and the management of its resources.

In the statement, he also disclosed that the law will improve competence in the police force through increasing training opportunities.

“Among others, the Act establishes an appropriate funding framework for the Police in line with what is obtainable in other Federal Government key institutions, enhances professionalism in the Force through increased training opportunities,” said Adesina.

The President’s spokesman also added that “It also creates enduring cooperation and partnership between the Police Force and communities in maintaining peace and combating crimes nationwide.”
