Edo Election: Gov Obaseki Secures Another Term In Office

The Edo governor has won the poll on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 307,955 votes while Ize-Iyamu gained 223,619 votes.

Governor Godwin Obaseki has secured another term of four years in office after beating his main challenger, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and other 12 candidates in the Edo Governorship Election, which took place on September 19.

The Edo governor has won the poll on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 307,955 votes while Ize-Iyamu gained 223,619 votes. Recall that Obaseki fell out with his predecessor Adams Oshiomhole, months before electioneering campaigns.

The APC screening committee disqualified him from contesting the primary election on the party’s platform after detecting discrepancies in his academic certificates. Consequently, the governor dumped the party for PDP and he was given a platform to contest for his re-election.

According to reports, over 2,210,533 Edo residents registered to exercise the right to vote in the election. The South Senatorial District of Edo had the highest number of registered voters with 1,281,414, while the North had 564,122, and the Central Senatorial District had the least of registered voters at 364,998.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disclosed that over 483,769 registered voters failed to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) for the Edo poll.
