Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised Nigerian newspaper publishers for supporting media freedom through a collective page one protest.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, the Nigerian Guild of Editors, and the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria sponsored the ‘Information Blackout’ headlines that appeared on the front pages of dailies such as Punch, Vanguard, The Nation, ThisDay, Guardian, and Daily Sun on Monday.

The headlines claimed that the National Assembly’s NPC and NBC (Media) Act amendment bills were hostile to press freedom and citizens’ right to information.

In response, Atiku said in a tweet on Monday that freedom of the press and access to information are the lifeblood of democracy and must not be jeopardized.

“I stand resolutely by the NUJ, NGE and NPAN in its campaign against information blackout as represented by the NPC and NBC (Media) Act amendment Bills.

“Freedom of the press and access to information is the oxygen of democracy and must never be compromised,” he said.
