Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has requested that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) apologize to Nigerians for a controversial comment made by the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar during a gathering of Northerners on Saturday.

During a discussion with the Arewa Joint Committee in Kaduna, Atiku who has claimed to be a ‘unifier’ advised the audience not to vote for a Yoruba or an Igbo presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.

Atiku who is a northerner from Adamawa state while responding to a question on why the North should vote for him in the election stated that the northerners need a northerner to be the next president.

In his own words, Atiku said, “What the average Northerner needs is somebody who’s from the North and also understands that part of the country and has been able to build bridges across the country.

“This is what the Northerner needs. It doesn’t need a Yoruba or Igbo candidate. I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of northern origin.’’

The so-called Unifier who seeks votes from Nigerians in 2023 to become the next president of Nigeria in the belief that he will unify the already divided country was insensitive to what the country is going through currently do to the divisive actions of the current President, Buhari.

The comment wasn’t well received by the Governor of Rivers State, Wike who is currently fighting Atiku’s silence over the injustice in the PDP. In fact, Wike said he finds it difficult to believe that the PDP presidential candidate made the statement.

Wike said that such a stance affirms the call for equity, fairness, and justice, and advises the leadership of the party to address the issue as soon as possible to avoid having Nigerians perceive the party as insensitive and devoid of the justice it promises.
