The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye, has died at the age of 66, according to reports, SurgeZirc Nigeria has learned.
Afuye died on Wednesday, October 19, at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti, where he was being treated for a cardiac arrest.

This was revealed in a statement issued by Yinka Oyebode, the Chief Press Secretary to Biodun Oyebanji, the state governor.
“The Government of Ekiti State regrets to announce the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Funminiyi Afuye.
“Rt. Hon Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado- Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest,” the statement read.

Afuye represented Ikere constituency 1 in the state House of Assembly until his death.
He was a two-term member of the Ekiti State Assembly and a former commissioner of the Ekiti State Ministry of Information.

On June 6, 2019, Afuye was sworn in as Speaker of the Sixth Assembly.
According to a report by The Nation, Afuye attended Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s inauguration on Sunday, October 16. He was also said to have attended plenary on Tuesday, October 18, prior to the unexpected turn of events on Wednesday.
