Capcom’s approach to the Resident Evil 4 remake is becoming clearer. Capcom’s story trailer and IGN’s gameplay preview both show that the developer isn’t messing with the core mechanics of 2005 classic while ramping up the horror.

While the re-do is certainly creepier (especially in cutscenes), the original RE4’s hectic action appears to be intact. You’re up against hordes of infected villagers who will gladly gut you with a chainsaw or pitchfork.

The remake still revolves around agent Leon Kennedy’s mission to rescue the US President’s daughter, Ashley Graham, from a parasite-worshipping cult-controlled Spanish village.

However, as you might expect, the plan quickly goes awry. But don’t expect a repeat. While the over-the-shoulder perspective and other mechanics from RE4 remain (with updated controls), Capcom has stated that the development team is “reimagining” elements of the plot.

The Resident Evil 4 remake will be released on March 24, 2023 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (via Steam). When the PlayStation VR2 headset is released, owners will receive exclusive content.

This isn’t as drastic a change as previous games in the series (which were complete gameplay overhauls), but it’s still significant. RE4 was popular in part because it represented a significant shift in the franchise’s game systems and storyline.

The update must strike a balance between recognizing that sharp turn and acknowledging that gamers’ expectations have changed 17 years later.
