The president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, had issued a statement asking citizens not to succumb to the federal government’s manipulation of the subsidy elimination and new pump price of petrol.
The Nigerian Labour Congress, or NLC, has also stated in response to the NNPC’s press release, calling it improper and requesting that it be rescinded immediately. a meeting has been scheduled to tackle this matter.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, has since urged the federal government, FG, to direct the NNPC to discontinue the “Vexatious pricing.” He went on to caution Nigerians not to fall for the FG and NNPC’s deception and to refrain from purchasing petrol at such pump pricing. He also noted that good-faith negotiations are required to reach an agreement.
Discussions on subsidy elimination with the NLC and the federal government were scheduled for Wednesday, May 31, 2023, in the presidential villa. The meeting began around 4 p.m., and attendees included Dele Alake, spokesman for A
PC President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mele Kyari, CEO of NNPC, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, former Edo state Governor, Adams Oshiomole, NLC President Joe Ajaero, and Trade Union Congress President, Festus Osifo, amongst many others.
The discussion lasted many hours, with the NLC demanding that the federal government reset pump prices to normal before negotiations begin, as they should have done.
The NLC President further indicated that the Federal Government had no discussions with the NLC.
Negotiations on subsidy elimination with the NLC and ne NLC President, further noted that the Federal government had no dialogue with the union previous to this development, and no palliative for Nigerians were put together, resulting in the unions’ rejection of this decision.

However, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress stated that he could not make a unilateral decision on subsidy withdrawal, which is why former President Muhammad Buhari labelled the issue as “sensitive” to the new government.
The conference ended in a stalemate after hours of negotiations. Dele Alake, the APC’s spokesman on media and communication, stated after meeting with the NLC that the government would reconvene at a later date because there are many issues to discuss and numerous factors to consider.
He also stated that he cannot reveal all of the facts from the meeting because a conclusion has yet to be reached.
As of today, no agreement has been achieved at the conference, and Nigerians continue to suffer under this new leadership.
