Among other things, the former Labour leader stated that the incumbent president has criticised circumstances in which Nigeria provides electricity to neighboring Niger while her own people are left in the dark.

The President has gotten right to work. He has begun what he pledged to accomplish. People may not like the immediate result, but what he saves will be ploughed in the long run.

As governor of Edo State, I established the Azura power plant, which produces approximately 750 megawatts.

However, that power is often transferred to Niger Republic, and you have no power in Benin. The President has officially signed legislation stating that you can generate and consume power where you generate it.

You don’t have to transfer it to avoid the system collapsing and leaving producers and consumers in the dark. That is now a legal requirement. He signed it last week, the former Governor noted.

This Begs the question, Why does Nigeria send power to Niger?

As Nigerians remained concerned about the continuous exportation of energy to neighboring nations in the face of a national supply crisis, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that the arrangement had been terminated.

Abdulaziz, who also serves as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the West African Power Pool (WAPP), stated that the regional market will allow generation firms (GenCos) to export power to other West African countries that will be served by TCN transmission facilities.

He claimed that by exporting power, the Federal Government might gain more foreign currency for national development.

TCN, according to Abdulaziz, has introduced a high-tech system dubbed Internet of Things (IoT) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) as a stop-gap measure to boost the national grid.

According to him, the technology will boost real-time grid operations pending the introduction of a long-term network automation system.

We’ve come a long way with the acquisition of new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems, he remarked.

TCN’s CEO stated that by improving coordination with other participants in the electrical value chain, the company was able to reduce incidences of system failure.

Abdulaziz also revealed that TCN was constructing two new National Control Centres in Abuja and Osogbo. He stated that control centers would strengthen the Nigerian electrical grid even further.

According to him, the National Control Centre and other technological systems will strengthen national stability. Micheal Okoh, Convener of the Nigerian Power Consumers Forum (NPCF), stated that only such vital power transmission system investments, backed by a comparable strength at the DisCos’ end, will provide power consumers relief.

According to Okoh, a stop-gap solution exists in some nations such as Benin Republic and it was better than late Nigeria.
