After a week of conflict, Kunle Oluomo has been reelected as Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly.

Mr Oluomo was the Speaker of the last assembly of the House but had faced an a challenge for the seat from a former deputy Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide.

The two lawmakers are APC (All Progressives Congress) members, who currently hold 17 of the House’s 26 seats. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has the remaining nine members.

The contest created tension that was believed to have forced the Clerk, Deji Adeyemo, to announce to announce a postponement of the House’s inauguration last Tuesday, almost three hours before the occasion.

After the House was eventually formally inaugurated on Tuesday, Mr. Oluomo’s return ended the leadership race.

As the members-elect arrived at the assembly complex for the ceremony, there was strict security.

The Clerk of the House called for nominations for the election of the Speaker and deputy Speaker after around four hours of sporadic pauses due to security threats.

Lamidi Olatunji, who represents the Ado-Odo constituency, put forward the nomination for Mr. Oluomo, and Waliu Owode, who represents the Ijebu-East seat, seconded it.

However, nobody other was put forward for the job, which made Mr. Oluomo eligible to run again unchallenged.

Latifat Ajayi, a female member of the House from the Yewa South Constituency, was also chosen without opposition to serve as the Deputy Speaker. Oluwayemisi Bakare of the Ijebu-Ode constituency made the nomination, and Olusegun Odunuga of the Ijebu-North 2 constituency seconded it.

Following the swearing-in of the two chief officials, Mr. Oluomo gave the oath to the assembly’s other members.
