France In Uproar Over Police Shooting Of A 17-Year-Old Boy

France in uproar as protesters takes to the streets,  chanting “long live Algeria” in response to the murder of Nahel M, a 17 year old who was shot by a French police officer.

Kylian Mbappe, a French football player, says “violence solves nothing” and advocates for “mourning, dialogue, and reconstruction” instead.

The cop who shot Nahel has apologized to his family, but the teen’s death has reignited protests in France’s suburbs about policing and racial profiling.

According to the French interior ministry, Nahel M. allegedly refused to stop for a traffic check by two police officers, who then fatally shot him.

Following the murder of the Algerian-origin kid, violent protests erupted in France on Wednesday. Protesters criticized the police brutality that resulted in his murder.

The unrest began on Thursday, when police fatally shot a 17-year-old Algerian boy called Nahel M. Multiple French demonstrators were heard yelling “One, two, three, long live Algeria” in front of police patrols in Lyon city in France.

Gérald Darmanin, the interior minister, said 471 people have been arrested so far in a fourth night of rioting in France on Friday evening, but that there had been a “downturn” in violence.

He has repeatedly urged parents to keep their children out of the disturbances, with reports of children as young as 13 taking part.

The government also requested that overnight bus and tram services be suspended, and stated that armored vehicles would be utilized to assist law enforcement.
