Emefiele, the suspended CBN Governor,  who was initially taken into custody by the DSS, has been officially charged for the illegal possession of firearms by the federal government.

The federal government has charged suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele with illegal processions of firearms and ammunition before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

In the charge sheet obtained by our correspondent, the federal authorities accused Emefiele of illegally possessing a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371).

According to the authorities, the offences violate Section 4 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004 and are penalised under Section 27 (1b) of the same Act.

In the second count, the suspended CBN Governor was charged with illegally possessing 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) s without a licence, which is a violation of Section 8 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004 and a violation of Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.

A judge has yet to be assigned to the case.

Emefiele has been detained by the DSS since June 10 for “investigative purposes,” according to the agency’s website.

Dr Peter Afunanya, the DSS’s spokesman, said in a statement on Thursday that the agency has accused Emefiele in court following an Abuja High Court order.

However, he did not reveal the nature of the charge or the court before it was filed.

“The Administrative Judge will most likely assign the case to a judge on Monday,” one source stated.
