Ebonyi State Govt Raises Workers' Wages By N10,000

Ebonyi State Government announced yesterday an increase in worker’s salaries by N10,000 to mitigate the impact of President Tinubu’s recent revocation of fuel subsidies.

Journalist Briefing Mr. Jude Okpor, State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, stated shortly after the State Executive Council meeting at the New Executive Council Chambers, Government House Abakaliki, that the State Governor, Rt. Hon Francis Nwifuru, has directed that the policy be implemented immediately.

Exco discussed and debated the subject of worker pay. The Executive Council, chaired by the Chairman of Council, agreed to increase N10,000 to every worker’s wage in the state to offset the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

According to Mr. Okpor, the State Executive Council also approved the hiring of 1454 Ebonyi State indigenes into the state public service to cover gaps that had arisen over the years.

Governor Nwifuru has mandated the SSG, Professor Grace Umezuruike, to investigate the finances of the State University (EBSU) in order to determine the upward review of subvention to the University.

Mr. Okpor revealed that the Council also debated on the challenges in some sections of the state and formed a 17-member committee to address them.

He stated that the committee will investigate the Ezza Effium and Effium crises in Ohaukwu local government area, as well as the sinkwo/Abaomege dispute in Onicha Local Government Area, Amana/Ikwo in Ezza South, and Ikwo Local Government Area.

Mr. Okpor reiterated that, according to the Governor, some of the recommended members may have a conflict of interest because they are directly or indirectly tied to some of the parties involved in the crisis.

He further mentioned that the Governor advised that only those of impeccable character and proven integrity be appointed to the committee.

Bishop Emeritus Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, Bishop Nnachi Okoro, traditional rulers, and other State Executive Council members are among the members.
