UAE may have taken a role in the attempted coup against Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, according to the Algerian newspaper Le Soir d’Algerie.

According to the publication, all eyes were on the current Niger ambassador to the UAE, who was the army’s chief of staff before Bazoum fired him.

The presence of the former chief of staff of the Niger army in the UAE may have allowed him the “bravery” to turn the tables on Bazoum, especially if he was encouraged by high officials in Abu Dhabi, according to the newspaper.

This article follows an unprecedented attack on the Emirati involvement in the region by the Algerian media.

El Khabar, an Algerian daily, provided material attributed to “reliable” sources.

It claimed that the UAE had performed “hostile acts” against Algeria, including helping Moroccan authorities with a spy programme to use against the country and attempting to push Maghreb countries towards normalisation with Israel in order to weaken Algeria.

The publication referred to Abu Dhabi as “the capital of confusion” in its piece.

“Emirati officials want to impose their country’s presence in the Sahel region at any cost and in any way,” El Khabar stated.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry condemned the coup attempt, calling for an immediate halt to what it called an intolerable assault on constitutional order and a significant violation of the rule of law standards.
