The Federal Ministry of Aviation announced the choice in a memo on June 1, 2023, with the intention of recognizing noteworthy Nigerians.
The document was written by Joke Olatunji on behalf of the Director of Airport Operations and provided to Channels Television on Monday, June 26, 2023.
The statement claims that the government’s continuing changes in the aviation industry include the renaming of the airports.
Famous people from a variety of areas have been selected to have their contributions to Nigeria’s development.

- Benin Airport – Oba Akenzua II
- Dutse Airport– Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi
- Ebonyi Airport –Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo
- Gombe Airport – Brigadier Zakari Maimalari
- Ibadan Airport – Samuel Ladoke Akintola
- Ilorin Airport – Gen. Tunde Idiagbon
- Kaduna Airport – Hassan Usman Katsina
- Maiduguri Airport – Gen. Muhammadu Buhari
- Makurdi Airport – Joseph Sarwuan Tarka
- Minna Airport – Mallam Abubakar Imam
