In a strategic move to accelerate its cloud computing ambitions, Akamai made the acquisition of Linode, and it is now expanding its services further.
Today, the company has announced the addition of five new locations to its cloud computing infrastructure.

The locations are Paris, Washington, D.C., Chicago (already live), and Seattle and Chennai (to be launched later this quarter).
To complement these new locations, Akamai is introducing a range of premium instances tailored for commercial workloads. These instances will be available in the recently launched sites.
Furthermore, users of Akamai’s object storage service can now take advantage of increased storage capacity, with the ability to store up to one petabyte and one billion objects per bucket.
Additionally, a new global load balancer has been introduced, which combines the capabilities of Linode’s load balancer for local traffic load balancing with Akamai’s global traffic manager and application load balancer.
Adam Karon, the Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of the Cloud Technology Group at Akamai, emphasized the importance of distributed infrastructure for distributed workloads.
“Distributed workloads require distributed infrastructure,” said Adam Karon.
“Legacy, centralized cloud architecture was not designed for the demands of developers and companies challenged with delivering better user experiences that increasingly require putting applications and data closer to the customer.”
During an interview at the Collision conference in Toronto, Akamai CEO Tom Leighton expressed the company’s substantial investment in upgrading Linode to cater to mission-critical applications of major enterprises.
Leighton highlighted the enhancements made to the object storage service, which were released alongside this announcement.
He anticipates that these upgrades will attract many of the company’s media customers to its cloud computing service.
Leighton further pointed out that Akamai possesses a competitive advantage due to its extensive existing infrastructure.
This, according to him, will enable the company to offer lower bandwidth rates compared to other major cloud computing providers.
As part of their future plans, Akamai aims to make Linode more developer-friendly and easy to use, deploying the software within the existing Akamai platform.

In Leighton words: “Ultimately, we’re going to make Linode even more developer-friendly and easy to use as we deploy the software in the existing Akamai platform so that we can offer you containers in hundreds of places, for example.”
Leighton disclosed that Akamai intends to introduce approximately a dozen additional locations for its cloud computing services in the third quarter of this year.
