Arsenal is reportedly considering a move for Bayer Leverkusen’s right-back Jeremie Frimpong, potentially competing with Manchester United for his signature.

Mikel Arteta is keen to add an offensive right-sided defender to the team, and the 22-year-old Dutchman fits the profile.

The transfer could be relatively straightforward as Leverkusen is said to be open to selling the player, and they have already secured a replacement in Arthur from Atletico Mineiro.

Frimpong joined Leverkusen from Celtic midway through the 2020/21 season and has since made 95 appearances, contributing 11 goals and 20 assists.

He still has two years remaining on his contract with the German club.

While Arsenal is interested in Frimpong, they may face competition from Manchester United, who are also reportedly keen on signing the talented right-back.

United’s manager, Erik Ten Hag, is said to be interested in bringing his compatriot to Old Trafford.

Despite his impressive performances, Frimpong found himself in controversy with Dutch national team manager Ronald Koeman.

The former Everton and Barcelona boss hit out at Frimpong after he rejected the chance to appear for the Dutch under-21 side at the Euros this summer.

He said: “Not good. I don’t think that’s okay. The Dutch Juniors are playing a European Championship. If a player thinks he’s gone beyond that level, I think you’re making the wrong decision.”

The former Everton and Barcelona boss criticized Frimpong for rejecting the opportunity to represent the Dutch under-21 side at the Euros this summer.

In addition to Frimpong, Arsenal has alternative options for their right-back position.

Ivan Fresneda has long been linked with a move to North London, although recent reports suggest he is closing in on a switch to Barcelona.

Another option is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Henrichs, and talks have been initiated with the player’s representatives.

However, Leipzig is reluctant to sell Henrichs as new manager Marco Rose sees him as a key member of the squad for the upcoming season.
