Court orders former member of the House of Representatives sentenced to 5 years in jail for N212m fraud.

Mansur Ali Mashi, a former House of Representatives member who represented the Mashi Dutsi federal seat, was sentenced to 5 years in prison on Friday, June 16, for N212m fraud.

In a 12-year trial, Mansur Ali Mashi was found guilty on eight charges of conspiracy and acquiring by false pretenses, together with three bank officials: Abdulmumini Mustapha, Shehu Aliyu, and Muazu Abdu.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accused him of fraudulently obtaining a loan facility worth N212,439,552 (two hundred and twelve million, four hundred and thirty-nine thousand, five hundred and fifty-two naira) from a new generational bank, which he diverted for personal use.

When the case was called in Court on Thursday, June 15, the first defendant, Mansur Ali Mashi, was not present, but he was found guilty on counts 1 through 8 and convicted accordingly.The fourth defendant was likewise not present, but the court found him guilty on all charges and sentenced him in.

However, the court postponed sentencing for the two absentee defendants until they were apprehended and brought before the court.

The second defendant, Abdulmumin Mustapha, a former Sterling Bank branch manager, was convicted on all counts and sentenced to five years in jail without the option of a fine. The court also ordered the second defendant to repay Sterling Bank N40,000,000 (forty million Naira).

The third defendant, the bank’s former Head of Operations, was found not guilty on counts 1-8 but convicted on counts 9-15 and sentenced to 5 years in jail without the possibility of a fine.

Mansur Ali Mashi is also awaiting a decision in a contempt of court charge before the same court. The verdict is scheduled for today, June 16, 2023. He was accused of selling properties that the Court had taken through an interim forfeiture order.
