NARD demands a 200% salary rise and provides the President more time.
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the health sector in order to combat the perilous brain drain.

While most doctors are skilled and patriotic, the bad working environment, welfare, and insecurity, among other factors, have driven many to seek greener pastures abroad.

In a letter written to the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Health on July 7, 2022, the doctors union insisted on at least a 200 percent increase in the base income of its members, plus additional allowances.

The NARD expressed shock at the recent spike in petroleum product prices as a result of the elimination of subsidies, according to the government, would result in higher inflation and living costs.

The union urged the government to implement measures to mitigate the impact of subsidy reduction on poor Nigerians. The doctors expressed their dissatisfaction in a statement issued during their union’s regular general meeting in Lagos.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has given the federal government two weeks to fulfill agreements about its members’ requests or risk strike action.
This was stated in a statement issued yesterday at the conclusion of the association’s extra-ordinary National Executive Council meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to the statement, the discussion was based on critical pressing issues affecting the welfare of resident doctors and other healthcare workers in the country.

The requirements from the doctors were, “Immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) in accordance with the agreements reached at the stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Health, as well as payment of all their salary arrears,” the requests state.

“Immediate infrastructure development in various hospitals without further delay, and subsequent budgetary allocation to health of at least 15%.”

“Immediate installation of CONMESS, MRTA domestication, and a review of risk allowances by all state governments as well as private tertiary health institutions where residency training is provided”.

“Immediate payment of all salary arrears owed to doctors by various state governments, the most notorious of which is the Abia State government.”

In addition to the increased allowances, the doctors have requested a 200 percent gross wage increase in their letter to the Minister of Health for the review of CONMESS on July 7, 2022.
