Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has announced that he is resigning his whole cabinet after failing to reach an agreement with coalition partners on immigration policy.
It’s no secret that the coalition partners have differing opinions about immigration policy, he said at a press conference late Friday night.

Unfortunately, we must now conclude that those differences have become insurmountable.
As a result, I will present the resignation of the entire ministry to the monarch in writing, he continued.
The move, which would result in the Dutch government collapsing and new elections, was prompted by disagreements between Rutte’s conservative VVD party and coalition partners over steps to stem the flow of asylum seekers.
While the VVD advocates tougher controls, two of the four-party government coalition’s members have refused to endorse them.
Rutte’s party has proposed banning entry for children of war refugees already in the country and requiring families to wait at least two years before being reunited.
This plan was rejected by the small Christian Union and the liberal D66, resulting in the split.
Migration is a large and important social and political issue. Now that we have been unable to reach an agreement on this issue, we met in the cabinet to discuss the situation and collectively decided that the coalition had lost its political foundation, Rutte said on Friday.

He went on to say that it was extremely regrettable, yet he acknowledged that’s the unavoidable political reality.
As a result, the entire cabinet and its leaders have been designated as a caretaker government. The next step will be to hold new elections, he explained.
