Ortom enters the EFCC office following the invitation. On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, around 10:08 a.m., Ortom showed up at the EFCC zonal office on Alor Gordon Street after being invited by the anti-graft organization for questioning.
Terver Akase, his media assistant, and Abraham, his senior special assistant on special responsibilities, were with him.
Ortom was held by the EFCC for hours, which suggests that the agents severely questioned him. Although it was unclear exactly what claims he was being questioned about, insiders claimed they had to do with the way he handled state monies during his eight years as governor.
On May 29, 2023, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia succeeded Ortom, a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who switched to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018. He had left his successor with a N187.7 billion debt load that includes overdue loans, bonds, salary, and pensions.
A total of N734.9 billion, according to Ortom’s claims, was earned during his government between from 2015 and 2023, and throughout that time it accrued a total debt of N187.7 billion.
He also claimed to have obtained approval for an N41 billion loan and a N20 billion Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) facility for his successor to use.
