The federal government’s 15-count charge against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been dismissed by a federal high court in Abuja.
On Friday, April 8, Justice Binta Nyako dismissed Kanu’s motion, striking out charges 6,7,9,10,11,12,13, and 14.
According to the Cable newspaper, Justice Nyako stated that the IPOB commander will be tried on counts 1,2,3,4,5,8, and 15. Kanu’s lead lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, called the charges “defective and baseless.”
He further stated that a prosecutor is required by the federal high court legislation to provide accurate details of the site where an offense is committed.
Ozekhome accepted his application and requested that the entire charge be dismissed. The prosecution’s lawyer, Shuaibu Labaran, sought the court to dismiss the defendant’s application.

Recall that Kanu’s legal team had alleged that the IPOB leader was not receiving sufficient medical care in the Department of State Service, DSS, detention facility in Abuja. According to the Vanguard newspaper, IPOB’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, revealed this to journalists in Owerri after their visit to Kanu last week.
Kanu’s health is deteriorating, according to Ejiofor, and he has been denied access to his private doctor by the Department of State Security, as ordered by the court.
Ejiofor previously stated that during his imprisonment by the DSS, the IPOB leader had not changed his attire. He further stated that Kanu’s health was deteriorating as a result of bad medical treatment.
