The Enugu State administration, led by Governor Peter Mbah, demolished a structure belonging to Barrister Okey Ezugwu, a retired Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, in what several witnesses described as “land grabbing” by the authorities.
According to SurgeZirc NG, former Governor Sullivan Chime awarded the land in Independence Layout to Ezugwu and issued him with a certificate of occupancy (C of O) in 2014.

Instead of prosecuting the case, he dropped it and hired soldiers from Army headquarters to terrorise Ezugwu and his family.
He waited until Governor Peter Mbah was inaugurated as governor of Enugu State after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained him for trespassing on the property.
According to SurgeZirc NG, Governor Mbah visited to Ezugwu’s house on July 14, 2023 and marked it for demolition through the State Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).
Despite the fact that the case was still ongoing in court, they gave him 48 hours to remove the residence.
They were also accused of brutalising retired Immigration Officer Barr Ezugwu and stealing his phones.
SSG Onyia, on the other hand, was contacted, and after meeting with the parties in his office on Monday, he directed the ECTDA to Supervise Supervise demolition of the building.
