Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has urged Harry Maguire to stay this summer and is hoping the England international will remain at Old Trafford.

This is despite replacing the centre-back as the Red Devils’ club captain, with Bruno Fernandes taking the role ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Maguire held the position for three-and-a-half years before being replaced by Fernandes, which was confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

Maguire has also supposedly been left out of Ten Hag’s leadership group at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has chosen Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Tom Heaton and Casemiro as the five to support captain Fernandes and offer advice in major decisions at the Red Devils this term.

But, according to talkSPORT, Ten Hag is still eager to keep Maguire at the club this summer.

The ex-Ajax boss has told the defender he doesn’t want him to leave the Red Devils amid reported interest from West Ham.

Chelsea and Tottenham have also been linked with a move for the England international.

Maguire made just 16 Premier League appearances for United last season and was fourth choice centre-back behind Lisandro Martinez, Varane and Victor Lindelof.

In fact, Shaw was preferred to Maguire in central defence at times which further fuelled speculation over a summer move.

It is understood Ten Hag privately told Maguire that he doesn’t want him to leave, he just wants to pick his own captain, with Fernandes now getting the nod.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Ten Hag should sell Maguire, however, and insists it’s the best move for both parties.

“Erik ten Hag has a particular way of playing. He has to choose players that suit his style of football, and Harry Maguire does not fit the bill.

He brought in Martinez and Varane to fit his philosophy and those will be his first-choice centre-backs next season,” he told TNT Sports.

“It will have been really difficult for Maguire, after playing so well for England, coming back to Manchester United to be a substitute. That must have been mentally very hard to deal with.

“The question now is, what does he want to do? Does he want to be a squad player or does he want to be a starter in another team?

If he is happy being a squad player at Manchester United then he stays, if he doesn’t then he will go. But he will be a sub if he stays at United.”

Maguire has made 175 appearances in a United shirt since moving for £80million from Leicester in 2019.

He was a mainstay under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick but has since lost his place in the XI following Ten Hag’s appointment last summer.
