Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) has expelled Lortim Philemon Vasue, a 400-level Political Science student at the institution, over a post he made on Facebook a year ago.
Vasue was dismissed for posting on Facebook regarding the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ eight-month strike planned for 2022.

Between March and June 2022, Vasue posted on his Facebook page, including one that says, “ASUU has always been of the notion that the Federal Government isn’t funding federal varsities; so why would the ASUU allow accreditation of federal varsities to go successfully even though the prerequisites for granting accreditation, which is adequate facilities, were not in place only for the purpose of granting accreditation.”
He also gave an example of a delegation from the National University Commission (NUC) visiting his school for accreditation and asking a student if the institution had Wi-Fi (Campus Area Network), to which the student said yes despite the fact that there was none at the time.
FUGUS identified Vasue as one of the expelled students in a news release issued on Wednesday, which announced the expulsion of seven students and the rustication of six others for alleged wrongdoing.
The statement, headlined ‘FUGUS Expels Seven Students, Rusticated Six For Misconduct,’ was signed by the university’s Information Officer.
The case has been pending for over a year, and the management of Federal University Gusau (FUGUS), Zamfara State finally sat at its 82nd meeting held on 15th July, 2023 to consider the best and finally way to handle the matter.
The report and recommendations were forwarded to the Students’ Disciplinary Committee and expelled seven students and rusticated six for gross misconducts.
“The affected students were proven to have committed various offences that violated the laws and regulations governing student conduct at the University.”

Vasue called his expulsion from the university as “unjust” and “a grave matter that has affected my life and future prospects as a student in Nigeria”.
He expressed regret for suffering as a result of “exercising my fundamental right to express my position on the ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) strike of 2022.”
“In addition, I urge the Federal Government to take steps to protect free speech and expression for all Nigerian students, ensuring that such injustice does not occur again.”
