FG Declares Monday, June 12, A Public Holiday. In honor of Democracy Day, the federal government has designated Monday, June 12, a public holiday.
Oluwatoyin Akinlade, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior, said in a statement on Thursday that the country’s democratic journey has seen both stormy and pleasant passages. “But the ship of state, its institutions, and, most importantly, the Nigerian people have remained steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance,” she stated.
“On this memorable occasion, Nigerians and friends of Nigeria are therefore invited to appreciate the progress that has been made, celebrate the milestones that have been reached, and look forward to a better future for the country’s democracy.”

Former President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as the new day for commemorating Nigeria’s democracy in June 2018. The decision was made to The decision was made to honor MKO Abiola, the presumed victor of the presidential election on June 12, 1993, posthumously.
Democracy Day was previously observed on May 29 each year as mandated by the FG. This was said by Dr Oluwatoyin Akinlade, permanent secretary, Ministry of Interior, on Thursday in Abuja. Ms Akinlade, who spoke on behalf of the federal government, congratulated all Nigerians on the occasion.
She stated that, like many other countries, Nigeria’s democratic journey had faced both stormy and smooth sails, but that the ship of state, its institutions, and, most importantly, Nigerians had remained firm on the fundamentals of democratic administration.
