GoFundMe campaign has been launched in support of a French police officer accused of killing a teenager during a traffic stop in France, sparking fury among lawmakers and activists.

According to Al Jazeera, the appeal, which was put up by Jean Messiha, a former adviser to French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, has raised 963,000 euros ($1.05 million) as of Monday.

The teenager was killed by the bullet, and the event has sparked days of outrage across France.

When Nahel’s grandma, Nadia, was asked about the crowdfunding campaign, she said, “My heart aches.”

The death of the kid has reignited concerns about France’s long and contentious relationship with its ethnic minority populations, as well as charges of police violence.

President Emmanuel Macron’s En Marche, Eric Bothorel tweeted: “The reward of several hundred thousand euros for the police officer charged with the murder of young Nahel is deplorable and disgraceful.”

The Socialist Party’s leader, Olivier Faure, has asked GoFundMe to close the fundraising on GoFundMeto, accusing the platform of “hosting a pot of shame”
