Giwa Shamseddin, a popular Nigerian marriage therapist, has encouraged Nigerian couples considering relocating abroad to reconsider their decision.
He revealed this in a Facebook post, recounting his own story, titled “The Relocation Story You Don’t Get Told,” and how things went for him and his wife during the difficult journey, as follows:

“The untold story of relocation.”
“This was us a few years ago, when we were a young couple yearning for a better life abroad. The vision was good, the intentions were good, and we had enough to get started. We simply did not have enough information about how difficult it would become”.
“We began our lives in a single room in a shared flat, where we were even restricted from using the washing machine or turning on the heating (even in winter)”.
“The occupations were degrading and constantly exhausting, but the bad exchange rate of my home currency created the illusion that one was earning well while the reality was quite different”.
“Even with both of our salaries, it was tough to live comfortably. Take note: we outperformed everyone else here!”.
“We were at least together, but due to our hectic work schedules, we rarely got to spend time together, and our marriage was strained. Consider how many people had their husbands return home, and how their marriages fared.”
“One was never completely settled since one was always at the mercy of the home office, which was always modifying immigration laws”.
“Finally, we returned home and quietly restarted our lives together. Everything we sought overseas was provided to us back home decades later! Alhamdulillah”.
Imagine how many people are still stuck, unlawfully living, unable to work at ordinary wages, unable to even rent a property in their name, unable to establish an account, unable to have peace of mind and always fearful of law enforcement, unable to grow and impossible to return home!
“What exactly is the point?” Relocating will put you and your marriage to the test in different ways. “Please be cautious before you copy someone and sell everything you own”, Mr Giwa stated.
However, if you find yourself stuck, have a clear exit strategy in place, even if it means returning home to start over.
Many people and marriages are falling apart as a result of unanticipated pressure. Don’t go this way; instead, conduct thorough research, your home depends on it.
