Gov Fubara Warns Army GOC To Avoid Rivers Politics

Gov Siminalayi Fubara has warned the incoming General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamil Abdussalam, to stay out of state politics or face repercussions.

Gov Fubara provided the advice on Tuesday at Government House in Port Harcourt, when Major General Abdussalam paid him a visit to pledge the Division’s support for his administration and to seek continued state support in mutual trust for greater security.

“Don’t get involved in politics,” the governor advised.

Your predecessors who dabbled in politics here fared poorly. If you do not listen and engage, when we (the River people) conclude our prayers, you will be punished, the Gov stated.

He said that some people freely carry weapons in a state location where the military maintains a camp, claiming that the development raises concerns about the Army’s involvement in state security.

“I feel very embarrassed that there is a camp somewhere in Degema (local government area),” Fubara remarked. It’s a military base, and citizens flaunt their weapons around it.

“Is it that our laws now allow people to brandish AK47s, that people can display these weapons in front of military personnel, and you do nothing about it?”

“We will provide the material assistance that you require.” Also, cash assistance for your field officers. We shall proceed with those items.

“Our N195. 3 billion Ring Road Project, which spans six LGAs, is a major undertaking, and there is every chance that we will encounter security issues.”
