Governor Siminialayi Fubara has recently thrown out over 1700 workers of the Ignatius Ajuru University, politically placed by former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.

The recent recruitment finished by his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike, into Rivers state-owned Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt, has thrown over 1700 impacted workers into turmoil, and stakeholders are reacting to it.

Governor Fubara’s administration announced the revocation in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Prince Chinedu Mmom, claiming irregularities and disobedience to varsity management guidelines.

“The Government of Rivers State has observed with dismay, the inconsistencies/irregularities and flagrant disobedience to the directives concerning the recently concluded recruitment exercise at the IAUE, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt,” according to the statement.

“As a result, the recent recruitment procedure carried out by the management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt is hereby canceled.

“All appointment letters issued and received are hereby null and void, and affected individuals are directed to immediately return the letters to the office of the Registrar of the institution, as well as other employment-related properties such as ID Cards in their possession to the office of the Head of Service, Rivers State.”

“The incumbent governor simply repeated what we said during the exercise.”

Rivers residents will never forget how quickly we raised the red flag about the impunity of nepotism, favouritism, and defective employment processes at the time.

“The cancellation of the recruitment at IAUE is a confirmation of the deception we have always warned Rivers people about,” Darlington Nwauju, spokesman for the All Progressives Congress in Rivers, stated.

“It’s a bold move,” remarked Zik Gbemre, Coordinator of the Niger Delta Peace Coalition. However, aside from the irresponsibility in unilaterally nullifying the entire process to the prejudice of people who may have earned their position legitimately, why penalise the innocent while ignoring the true offender?

“Besides, Wike should have some questions to answer.” If there were irregularities, the former governor sanctioned them since he approved the recruitment notwithstanding the concerns made by stakeholders.

Former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike is yet to respond to this bold move against him, by his political Godson.

“We hope he (Fubara) reviews the process in order to be fair to those who may have merited employment.” We’re talking about returning people who have been working for months to unemployment.”
