Greek Island Of Rhodes Encounters Wildfire Due To Heatwave

Greek Isand of Rhodes have encountered a roaring wildfire, spreading out of control for the fifth day in a row. The government has ordered the evacuation of four places, including two seaside resorts.

The wildfire had previously been limited to the island’s hilly centre, but it advanced Saturday towards the coast on the island’s central-eastern side, aided by winds, extremely high temperatures, and dry conditions.

According to local media, the fires had reached three hotels, whose guests had already been evacuated.

According to Yannis Artopios, a fire department spokeswoman, inhabitants of four villages were sent SMS messages to evacuate, and in two of them, they were advised to relocate northeast, and in the other, they were told to move southwest.

According to Artopios, more than 200 firefighters and 40 fire engines were on the ground, aided by three planes and five helicopters.

The force consists of 31 Slovakian firefighters and five fire engines.

The fire’s primary front is a triangle, with two points near the sea and one in the mountains. Each side of the triangle looks to be more than 10 kilometres (six miles) long on maps.

Three coast guard vessels and one army craft were rescuing individuals from two beaches. Twenty private boats assisted, and the Greek navy dispatched a vessel.

According to Artopios, the fire at Rhodes was only one of several active in Greece, but it was catalysed by the sudden heatwave in Europe.

He said the fires northwest of Athens and near Sparta were fading, but the conditions, including temperatures expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday and low humidity (below 15%), meant the threat was not ended and other wildfires might erupt.
