Gun Men Killed Catholic priest from the Benin Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Charles Igechi, in Benin, Edo State.


According to reports, the priest was shot by gunmen on Wednesday in the Agbor Road Bypass region in Benin’s Ikhueniro axis. He was supposed to be on his way to his workplace when the attackers struck him.

A Catholic priest from the Benin Archdiocese confirmed the priest’s death to our correspondent, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to talk on the topic. “It’s true; he was killed,” he said. Nobody was with him when he was gunned down. When his body was discovered, it was riddled with bullet wounds.”



Attempts to reach the Attempts to contact the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Chidi Nwanbuzor, were futile because calls and text messages to his cell phone were not returned. Augustine Akubeze, the Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, said the incident had been reported to police and expressed optimism that the perpetrators of the illicit conduct would face punishment.




In a condolence message published on Thursday, Akubeze said the priest, who was ordained in August 2022, was shot on his way back to his assignment and his remains were discovered by Boundary Street in Ikpoba Hill, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Edo State.

“It is with great grief and sorrow that we inform you of the loss of one of our priests in Rev. Fr. Charles Onomhoale Igechi, who was ordained on August 13, 2022, and who was the Vice Principal of St. Michael College, Ikhueniro till his death.



“We were shocked to learn this morning that he was shot on his way back to his place of assignment on June 7, 2023.”



“As a result, we would like to ask for your prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.”
