Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, has assured fans that Portugal will do all it takes to reach next year’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This is after they failed to secure automatic spots with a shocking 2-1 defeat against Serbia in their final World Cup qualifying encounter at home.

Portugal had opened the scoring in the second minute of the game through Renato Sanchez which was equalised by Serbia through Dušan Tadić in the 33rd minute.

Serbia went on to win the game after an effort by Aleksandar Mitrović in the 90th minute and are now on top of Group A in the World Cup qualifiers.

However, Ronaldo who remains confident in securing qualification gave no excuses for the loss, while expressing the optimism that Portugal which occupies the second position in Group A will be in Qatar.

He tweeted, “Football has shown us time and again that sometimes it’s the winding roads that lead us to the most desired wrecks.

“Yesterday’s result was tough, but not enough to bring us down.

“The goal of attending the World Cup 2022 is still very much alive and we know what we have to do to get there. No excuses. Portugal bound for Qatar.”

Portugal will now enter the play-off stages alongside the other 9 second-placed teams from Europe, from which only 3 three would find a place in the World Cup.
