The argument over the efficacy of traditional herbs and conventional medications has raged for decades, particularly in this region of the world.
Despite the fact that Nigeria’s healthcare system has evolved, most Nigerians continue to patronise traditional herb dealers because they feel they are more effective than orthodox treatments.
However, according to SurgeZirc NG, the use of these brewed or combined native plants, popularly known as ‘agbo’ in Yoruba, has also continued to generate worry in the medical industry.
However, there have been increasing concerns expressed concerning the ingestion of these mixtures, particularly their production.
These mixtures’ chemical agents have not been separated and analysed.
SurgeZirc NG has identified a new trend in the production of these traditional herbal medications, with merchants learning to add antibiotics and other Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to the herbal combinations for more effective outcomes.
She explained how the antibiotics are administered by emptying the contents of the white capsules into cornmeal (ogi/pap) water and then into the herbal concoction.
Mrs. Aishat Olalekan, the proprietor of a patent medicine store who also sells in the Isolo market, told SurgeZirc NG that the white capsules sold by the herbal seller were contaminated.
According to her, traditional herbal vendors add tetracycline or chloramphenicol to their herbal mixture for greater outcomes in treating toilet infection and other disorders such as typhoid fever.
Mrs. Olalekan said that several of the market’s herbal medicine vendors patronise her.
She went on to say that they even add aphrodisiac tablets like Vegas 100 to plants for male sexual stimulation.

To shed more light on the situation, Akinsiku stated that due to the inclusion of some of these tablets, these herbal concoction vendors frequently shake their contents thoroughly before selling to clients.
He highlighted that some of them add NSAIDs to the concoction for better patient outcomes.
