Lyon President, Jean-Michel Aulas wrote to the French Prime Minister requesting a reversal of the hasty decision taken to cancel the Ligue 1 season.

The 2019/2020 French Ligue 1 season ended prematurely last month after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that no sporting events would be permitted in France until September due to the widespread outbreak of the pandemic.

Lyon missed out on the Europa League qualification spot when the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed the final standings had been calculated on a points\per-game basis, and Aulas has refused to accept the decision to abruptly end the campaign, requesting that play-offs be arranged in August.

On Monday, May 25, 2020, just eight days before France is expected to announce ease in the lockdown measures in the country, Lyon published an open letter sent from their President, Aulas to the government.

The letter read: “The Bundesliga resumed matches on May 16th, Spanish League resumes on June 8, Italian and Portuguese Leagues has resumed group training and England is currently working towards a June 19th resumption.”

Furthermore it read: “How can France not be downgraded very quickly and see its professional football devalued? Many developments and hopes are expected on this date so that France can gradually regain a good dynamic.”

“Can we also conceive that June 2 is also a great opportunity to rectify the error concerning French Football and allow, with the health protocols used everywhere, a gradual resumption of training and thereafter a resumption of the 2019/2020 season over the months of July or August?” Aulas said.

Last week, Lyon alongside relegated teams Amiens and Toulouse had their appeals against abruptly ending the Ligue 1 season rejected.
