Threads, Instagram’s text-based app, has achieved a remarkable milestone of 100 million sign-ups in just five days since its launch on June 6 (June 5 in the Americas).
This rapid growth has surpassed the previous record set by OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot, which reached 10 million daily users in 40 days and 100 million monthly users in almost two months.

Despite its early success, the true challenge for Threads will be to retain its users and keep them engaged on the platform.
Meanwhile, there’s an ongoing tension between Meta and Twitter following the app’s launch last week.
Although the app is gaining popularity, there are still some missing features that users have noticed.
Notably, Threads currently lacks support for ActivityPub, the protocol used for posts on decentralized networks.
While Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has stated that they are working on integrating ActivityPub, the app cannot fully participate in the Fediverse until this integration is implemented.
Additionally, Threads does not have a web interface that allows users to create posts; it only provides a read-only web interface.
The app also lacks support for post search, direct messages, hashtags, and a “Following” feed.
Furthermore, due to Instagram’s content policies, nudity is not allowed on the platform, which sets it apart from Bluesky, another Twitter alternative that embraces more flexible content guidelines.
Nevertheless, achieving 100 million users in such a short timeframe is a significant accomplishment.

It indicates that Threads has made a strong impact and suggests that the app is likely to remain a prominent player in the social media landscape.
As Meta continues to refine the platform and address user feedback, it will be interesting to see how Threads evolves and competes with other text-based social platforms.
